Camogli Social Theatre

Inaugurated on the 30th of September, 1876, Camogli Social Theatre is an example of teatro all’italiana, with horse shoe diagram,
4 orders of balconies and gallery realized following the project of the Architect Salvatore Bruno, who also built the Modena Theatre in Sampierdarena in 1857.
Camogli’s Theatre was commissioned by 60 families of the local bourgeoisie that directly or indirectly made their fortune with the sea,
in a period in which Camogli was called “the city of the thousands white vessels” and was one of the major constructors and ship owners of that time.
The original wooden structure was completely renovated for safety in the ’30.
There were built the barcaccia (boxes), the stages of proscenium, the pit for the orchestra and a gallery
all around the stalls area to increase the seats that finished with a new opening on November 30th 1933.

After years of thriving and flourishing activity, its prestige declined to a new closure,
this was mainly due to the war and the consequent closing of the Genoese theatres.
In the 1980s it seemed to be starting to a rebirth thanks to new structural adjustment works promoted by the Province of Genoa.
Unfortunately, their interruption resulted in a nearly twenty-year closure due to inability.

This stalemate ended in 2002 with the birth of the Fondazione Teatro Sociale promoted by the box holders, descendants of the historic owners, and composed by bringing together public forces – Genoa Province, Municipality of Camogli and Recco – and individuals - Association "100 families" - with the aim of bringing the structure of the Social Theatre to its full recovery and structural adjustment and the full resumption of the activity.
